What Is a Blind Flange?

A Blind Flange is a solid pipe flange used to seal the end of a pipeline or pressure vessel opening. Unlike other flange types, a blind flange has no center bore, which completely blocks the flow of fluids or gases in the pipeline.

Blind flanges are often used when pipelines require temporary or permanent closure for maintenance, inspection, pressure testing, or future expansion.

Because they are bolted rather than welded, blind flanges can be easily removed, making them more convenient for maintenance compared with pipe caps or plugs.

Blind flanges are widely used in:

  • Oil and gas pipelines

  • Petrochemical plants

  • Power generation systems

  • Water treatment plants

  • Chemical processing industries

Key Features of Blind Flanges

Complete Pipeline Isolation

Blind flanges provide full isolation of the pipeline, preventing the flow of liquid or gas through the system.

Solid Disc Design

A blind flange is essentially a solid circular plate without a central hole, ensuring strong pressure containment.

Removable and Reusable

Blind flanges are bolted to the piping system and can be removed for inspection, cleaning, or pipeline modification.

Strong Pressure Resistance

Due to their solid structure, blind flanges are capable of withstanding higher internal pressure compared with many other flange types.

Flange Face Types

Blind flanges are available with several sealing surfaces:

  • RF – Raised Face

  • RTJ – Ring Type Joint

  • FF – Flat Face

RTJ blind flanges are typically used for high pressure and high temperature pipeline systems.

Applications of Blind Flanges

Blind flanges are mainly used to terminate or isolate pipeline systems.

Typical installation locations include:

  • Equipment nozzles

  • Pipeline end connections

  • Upstream or downstream of shut-off valves

They are commonly used for:

  • Pipeline pressure testing

  • Maintenance and inspection

  • Temporary pipeline shutdown

  • Future pipeline extension

Manufacturing Methods

Blind flanges can be manufactured using different production methods:

  • Forging

  • Plate cutting

  • Casting

  • Casting + forging combination

Among these processes, forged blind flanges provide the highest strength and best mechanical performance, making them the most widely used in industrial piping systems.

Forged Blind Flange

Forged blind flanges offer several advantages:

  • Dense internal structure

  • Higher mechanical strength

  • Better resistance to pressure and stress

  • Improved durability and service life

For this reason, forged flanges are preferred in high-pressure and critical piping systems.
